Abiotic factors influencing tropical dry forests regeneration BABT
Ceccon,Eliane; Huante,Pilar; Rincón,Emanuel.
Tropical dry forests represent nearly half the tropical forests in the world and are the ecosystems registering the greatest deterioration from the anthropogenic exploitation of the land. This paper presents a review on the dynamics of tropical dry forests regeneration and the main abiotic factors influencing this regeneration, such as seasonal nature, soil fertility and humidity, and natural and anthropic disturbances. The main purpose is to clearly understand an important part of TDF succession dynamics.

Evidence for insect seed predator dynamics mediated by vertebrate frugivores RChHN
PEGUERO,GUILLE; ESPELTA,JOSEP M.
Vertebrate frugivores have been suggested to reduce seed predation, indirectly controlling populations of insect seed predators (ISP) by means of consuming many individuals when feeding on fruits. The possibility has not been explored, however, that this 'frugivore predation' may differentially affect ISP according to species-specific differences in larval development time within the fruit. In the dry tropical forest trees Acacia pennatula and Guazuma ulmifolia we compared seed predation and the absolute and relative abundances of bruchid beetle species (Bruchinae) in two sites, one with large frugivores (cattle) and the other cattle-free for a considerable time. In the site with cattle we found a notable overall reduction in the proportion of seeds...

Fluctuating asymmetry of and herbivory on Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz (Fabaceae) in pasture and secondary tropical dry forest Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Viviane Andrade; Silva,Rosineide Nascimento da; Sousa-Souto,Leandro; Neves,Frederico de Siqueira.
Plants subjected to stressful environments tend to be more asymmetric with reduced defenses and are therefore more vulnerable to herbivory. This study investigates the relationship between herbivory and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in Poincianella pyramidalis in two contrasting habitat types in the Brazilian caatinga (shrublands). We tested the following hypotheses: that FA occurs in P. pyramidalis; that FA of P. pyramidalis leaves is greater in individuals located in pasture than in those located in secondary tropical dry forest; that herbivory by insects (leaf chewers and leaf miners) increases in parallel with increases in the level of FA; and that herbivory is more common in pasture than in secondary tropical dry forest. In each of the two environments,...

Woody medicinal plants of the caatinga in the state of Pernambuco (Northeast Brazil) Acta Botanica
Silva,Ana Carolina Oliveira da; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino de.
Floristic and phytosociological studies undertaken in six areas of the state of Pernambuco were selected with the aim of analyzing the Relative Importance of the woody medicinal plant species of Pernambuco's caatinga from an ethnobotanical perspective. For the data analysis, only those identified up to the species level were selected and information on medicinal properties was obtained for each one from the literature. The Relative Importance was calculated for each species. From the 57 woody species, 22 had therapeutic indications; from these, Anacardium occidentale L., Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC) Standley, Schinopsis brasiliensis Engl., and Myracrodruon urundeuva (Engl.) Fr. All. had the greatest values of Relative Importance. The correlation...
